School Journal Part 3 Number 3 2010

Designer Jodi Wicksteed
Title School Journal Part 3 Number 3 2010
Publisher Learning Media Te Pou Taki Kōrero
Format 232 × 170mm, 32pp, paperback, saddle stapled
Judges’ comments This journal impressed us with the creative use of the white feather behind the masthead and the mystical illustration on the cover. The design gives the journal a sense of liveliness and maintains the individuality of stories and articles, whilst upholding the distinctive feel of the School Journal.

Leprechaun Ice Cream

Designer Liz Tui Morris
Title Leprechaun Ice Cream
Publisher Learning Media Te Pou Taki Kōrero
Format 260 × 210mm, 56pp, gatefold paperback, matt lamination, section sewn
Judges’ comments By limiting the body text fonts, the designer has managed to create a sense of cohesion in this colourful book, which is no mean feat considering the diversity of the brilliant illustrations. Without being ostentatious, the typography of the headings complements and reflects the rhythms of the book's poems and stories.

Principles of Accounting 4th edition

Designers Marie Low (cover), Esther Chua (interior)
Title Principles of Accounting 4th edition by Murray J. Smart, Nazir Awan and Richard Baxter
Publisher Pearson
Format 254 x 200mm, 332pp, paperback, matt lamination, section sewn
Judges’ comments This book’s cover is eye-catching and funky. The sparing use of colour in the internal design creates a manual that is clean and precise, much like the practice of accounting. The design avoids heaviness in what is a text-dominant book by the intelligent use of typographic and colour variation to distinguish the different levels of headings.
