No Fretful Sleeper: A Life of Bill PearsonDesigner Keely O’Shannessy (cover)
Title No Fretful Sleeper: A Life of Bill Pearson by Paul Millar
Publisher Auckland University Press
Format 240 × 170mm, 432pp, gatefold paperback, matt lamination, printed inside cover, section sewn
Judges’ comments The cover features a compelling painted portrait of the biography's subject. The cover typography has a raw honesty that sets off the painting and also responds to it. The typography’s allusion to Colin McCahon’s painting style is inspired, as the artist designed the cover of Bill Pearson’s novel, Coal Flat.
Eep!Designer Spencer Levine (cover)
Title Eep! by Joke van Leeuwen
Publisher Gecko Press
Format 210 × 140,152pp, gatefold paperback, matt lamination with spot UV, printed inside cover, section sewn
Judges’ comments There is no missing this children's book as it leaps off the shelf with its bright, humorous cover. It has strong typography and a bold yet simple colour palette. The three feature elements, the two illustrations and the title, are immaculately balanced.
Lives of the PoetsDesigner Greg Simpson (cover)
Title Lives of the Poets by John Newton
Publisher Victoria University Press
Format 250 × 170mm, 86pp, paperback, matt lamination
Judges’ comments Outsized fonts and geometric patterns are fused in a highly distinctive cover. Rather than clash, they are cleverly held together by a restrained colour palette and judicious use of space.
