Judges’ comments Anna Egan-Reid’s design for Janet Frame: In Her Own Words is particularly impressive. The cover is sophisticated and the interior design beautifully tackles the constraints of the small format. Egan-Reid has a very impressive ability to design successfully across a variety of genres – the design for Moon Cow is so different from the other work in her portfolio and an excellent example of children’s book design.

Title Janet Frame: In Her Own Words by Janet Frame
Publisher Penguin Books New Zealand
Designer's comment Having been instantly taken with the photo-booth pictures of Janet Frame – her many expressions reflecting the different moods of her writing – I chose to use many small photos rather than a single image. The design achieves both a retro and a modern feel. Because the body type needed to be small to fit the required extent, I used Dante, a legible typeface even at small sizes.

Title Trail: Riding the Otago Central Rail Trail by Paul Sorrell
Publisher Penguin Books New Zealand
Designer's comment Trail is a vivid account of the journey across the Otago Central Rail Trail, enriched with stunning photographs and interviews with local personalities. The design is warm and inviting, enticing the reader to take the journey. A little hand-drawn bicycle on the chapter openers leads the reader through the trail.

Title Moon Cow by Kyle Mewburn
Publisher Penguin Books New Zealand
Designer's comment The text and illustrations are in perfect harmony, so the text design needed to tie into that. What resulted was a beautiful picture book greater than the sum of its parts. The title font looks as if someone with pretty handwriting has written in the sky, with tiny starbursts at the terminals of the letters.

Title Summer Houses by Andrea Stevens
Publisher Penguin Books New Zealand
Designer's comment Summer Houses is a handsome book that explores the connections New Zealand houses have with the outdoors. Summer Houses showcases over 20 homes with stunning photography by Simon Devitt. The design is clean and modern – letting the images be the focus – with a lively, summery colour palette.
