Judges’ comments: “Although the personality of the places and people does get the chance to shine, I feel some of the food photography could have been more centre stage and heroic. The illustrated buildings are an inventive touch and break up the reliance on photography.”

“Pragmatic, easy to read layout, good clear font. Energetic photos.”

“A real surprise. The cover isn’t exciting but inside, it’s a revelation! Beautiful typography and layout. Lovely photography. It paints a faithful portrait of a street through its food culture and the vibrant cultural history of iconic Cuba Street eateries and the people who go there. A narrative is revealed through these things.”

“There is a friendly informality to this book, kicked off by the people focussed endpapers. The recipe photos are process focussed – marrying well with the slice of life photography of the subjects, bars and eateries – giving a great sense of place. The energy of the book is derived primarily from the photography, with the typography providing an elegant, understated backbone. The asides on the heritage buildings add a nice illustrative touch, and you can see a clear love and knowledge of Cuba Street that’s carried through in all aspects of the book – including the design.”
