Judges’ comments The story behind the book, and the young author’s passion is well matched in the design response. The system and layout ably accommodates the sometimes tricky archival images as well as recent ‘in the field’ pictures with the author as roving researcher. The silhouette icons and scrap book angles of presentation inject an appropriate energy to enthuse readers. Nearly every double page spread has different entry points for either text or visually lead learning styles. And there’s the never fail appeal of Gross facts celebrated in the design!

The design takes a scrapbook/collage approach to a design that combines many disparate visual elements and typefaces. Strident colour, claw marks, textures, drop shadows and splashy-painted typefaces are unleashed on the reader – and that’s just the cover…
