The screen printed craft stock cover is a nod to handmade cardboard protest signs. The wood free text adds a warmth and tactility while hiding some of the imperfections of the content and imagery.

Typography: Fonts: Neue Haas Grotesk (9.5 size, 11.5 leading in body copy) and Franklin Gothic Condensed.
The design challenge was to hold the tension between the homemade production values of the material vs the gravitas of the subject matter. Each spread needed its own consideration and design, balancing the variable scales and perspectives, while the folios moved to respond to the layout.

Judges’ comments Bursting with collected objects and ephemera this striking design demands the reader remember the stories of dissent and activism.

There’s a lot to like about the design of this book — the choice of stock, the image treatment, the bold typography and the swagger of the moving folios. The one disappointment is the cover which doesn’t quite deliver on the boldness of the internal pages.
