Judges’ comments Perhaps one of the brightest covers our panel looked at, Rangikura is an achievement in illustrative branding. Even if the author’s name was not hand drawn on the cover, we would know who she is.
Hot pink dominates, flames lick heat and surfaces reflect. This cover has a beat, you can hear the roar of the engine – reflecting the nature of the poems inside. Hall is known for creating wahine legends and idols – this cover narrates a purakau for the future.
The lettering is bold and pulsing with energy, it melds into one with the illustrations, every space is filled. The spine and back take a deserved rest.
It’s a cover to be remembered.
