The illustration brief was for the cover to be summery and fun, bright and bold, perhaps a little retro/nostalgic, with a distinctively Kiwi feel, and details to remind adults of their childhood summers that would also be instantly recognisable for children today. The overall design brief for the treasury was summery and fun, bright and bold, nostalgic and graphic with a distinctly Kiwi feel, utilising the cover artwork created by Vasanti Unka and carrying the look through the pages. With all the different illustrative and text material in the treasury, the internal design would need to be cohesive.

Judges’ Comments: The clever use of yellow page edging, pattern endpapers, with additional repeat next papers says ‘fun’ from the outset. The spot varnish on covers elevates the already strong illustration — hinting at rays of sunshine catching the eye. A traditional set of stories and balanced illustrations are neatly designed.
