PANZ Young Designer of the Year Award

Shortlist 2013

KateBarraclough PicKate Barraclough graduated from Massey University with a Bachelor of Design (Hons) and started out as the junior designer for Random House in Auckland. She then moved to London where she set up as a freelancer, maintaining her contacts in New Zealand as well as working for a number of London-based publishers and design agencies. Now, back in Auckland, she is still designing books, this time from her studio space on K Rd. Kate Barraclough says, ‘I wouldn’t trade my job for anything!’

Judges’ Comments Kate blew us away with her versatile style and palette of fonts. She designs appropriately for the subject, in an accessible way that attracts readers. We loved the playful, quirky design of The Food Truck Cookbook, and felt she captured the brand perfectly in this design. The cover for Soon was a favourite, with the bright fonts working well over the modern image, making it really stand out. The Power of Us used beautiful typography, which let the photography shine. We felt all her books were strong and diverse.

Anna Egan-ReidAnna Egan-Reid has been in the book publishing industry for over 10 years. She began illustrating books at age 17 while studying her Bachelor of Arts in Art History and English. From there she learnt book design and typesetting in her family book-production company, Egan-Reid Ltd (later Pindar NZ). In 2010 she landed herself a fantastic job working in-house at Penguin Books (NZ), adding to her knowledge of commercial publishing. She is now back designing with her family again in a publishing services company. Anna says ‘Working with books is the ideal job for me as I get to combine my love of words with my love of the visual image.’

Judges’ Comments Anna Egan-Reid has worked on a diverse range of books. The judges loved the pared back sensitivity of Pie, with the clean layout and use of textures. Love and Money showcases her illustration skill and versatility. We loved the outershell of Little and Friday, with the puffed case and retro look. The idea of using two different serifs in Converted Houses to symbolise the old to new theme throughout the book was a fresh take for an architecture book.

Carla Sy PicCarla Sy's background is in visual communication design, which she studied at Massey University, graduating with First Class Honours in 2009. She was determined to get into the book design industry, so she asked Random House to help her gain some work experience. For the following year, they took her under their wing and she has been working as one of their full time designers for three years. Carla says, ‘book design is one of the most interesting industries, where no two jobs are the same ... It’s such an intricate and developmental process, and I enjoy being a part of it.’

Judges’ Comments Carla’s portfolio showcased originality and creativity, from her handmade cover for Once Were Warriors to the pairing of fonts and painting for Letters of Frank Sargeson. She can sensitively design for classic and modern subjects, and shows versatility in the way she uses typefaces. Nadia’s Kitchen is a very fresh and modern design, and we love the way the recipes are structured and the uneven borders on the photography give it an edge. Carla has a real talent in making the dullest covers come to life.
