Judges' Comments A book to truly celebrate New Zealand pop classics: bold, brash, colourful and entertaining. The typography shouts eloquently from the pages, and the sometimes challenging use of solid colours brings it all together.

KateBarraclough PicKate Barraclough graduated from Massey University with a Bachelor of Design (Hons) and started out as the junior designer for Random House in Auckland. She then moved to London where she set up as a freelancer, maintaining her contacts in New Zealand as well as working for a number of London-based publishers and design agencies. Now, back in Auckland, she is still designing books, this time from her studio space on K Rd. Kate Barraclough says, ‘I wouldn’t trade my job for anything!’

PANZ Book Design Awards 2013 Judges

Convening judge Gideon Keith has worked as a graphic designer and creative director for over twenty-five years. With over 450 book and magazine credits, publication design has been an enduring passion. Keith has been recognised with multiple design and advertising industry awards. He has spent eighteen years running a business and leading creative teams, with clients spanning New Zealand, Australia, Asia, the Pacific and the USA, including high-profile organisations such as Apple, Nescafe, Landrover, Auckland Airport and New Zealand Trade and Enterprise. Keith is now Creative Partner at Strategy Auckland.

Iain Sharp Judge Iain Sharp is an Auckland writer and librarian who works in Sir George Special Collections. He has a PhD in textual bibliography relating to Jacobean drama. From 1995 to 2005 he edited the book section of the Sunday Star-Times, and from late 2009 to early 2012 he was books editor at Metro. He is the author of four poetry books including, Real Gold: Treasures of Auckland City Libraries (Auckland University Press, 2007) and Heaphy (Auckland University Press, 2008).

Sarah MaxeyBW_cropSarah Maxey is a graphic artist, typographic illustrator and book designer. Her distinctive work has graced publications worldwide, including the New York Times and many literary books. She has won numerous awards, including the Designers Institute of New Zealand Purple Pin in 2011, and a Certificate of Excellence from the International Society of Typographers in the same year. Her work appears in Artists’ Postcards: A Compendium by Jeremy Cooper (Reaktion Books UK, 2012) and Cover Up by Hamish Thompson (Random House, 2007).

Megan Van Staden_BWMegan van Staden is a graphic designer based in Auckland. She is an inhouse designer at Random House and loves any excuse to dust off her paintbrush and doodle wonky type. She graduated from Massey University in 2009 with a Bachelor of Design (Hons) in Visual Communication Design. After graduating she travelled and taught English for four months in Chile, then landed her dream job designing books at Random House in early 2010. Her sensitivity to subject matter and versatility won her the title of Awa Press Young Designer of the Year at the PANZ Book Design Awards in 2012.
