2023 HACHETTE AOTEAROA NEW ZEALAND
EMERGING DESIGNER AWARD

Winner

Brittany Irvine

Brittany Irvine is a multi-disciplinary designer, extending her creative reach from her professional role in architecture to her independent work in graphic design.

A large part of architecture is communicating ideas, from the conceptual through to construction. This passion for visual communication extends to print and digital design. She enjoys the challenge of distilling complex information to make it easier for the reader to navigate and comprehend.

With her diverse skill set and unwavering commitment to enhancing visual experiences, Brittany continues to push boundaries in both architecture and graphic design, leaving a lasting impact on every project she undertakes.

Judges' comments I would not pick this book as one completed by an emerging designer. It is a large, complex project that would challenge designers of any level of experience. Brittany has produced a book that completely nails the challenges of the project with a highly functional grid system, intelligent typographic hierarchy, instructive colourways and well-integrated illustrations and diagrams.

Title:
Medium: A technical guide for creating better medium density housing in Aotearoa New Zealand by Guy Marriage
Publisher: EBOSS Ltd.

Design Statement: The brief required the books technical content to be distilled into a clean, clear and simple layout with lots of high-quality graphics. It had a wide target audience, the construction industry, with a focus on architects and designers. It needed to be easy for trades and design professionals to understand, along with council, project managers, developers, and politicians. The book needed a brand and visual identity to be developed that would also translate to the web. Four book parts were supplied by the author, along with a series of drawings. Complete design freedom and trust was given - from identity design through to colour and layout.
