The niho taniwha tukutuku pattern was chosen because this is a book about kaimoana. Taniwha are spiritual creatures and often kaitiaki (guardians) of people and places. At times they protect and at other times they attack. The pattern of sharp taniwha teeth reminds us to be wary, prepare for any eventuality and be mindful of the consequences of our actions.

The typefaces on the cover are all from the Domaine Sans family, designed by Kris Sowersby of Klim Type Foundry. Kris and I both live in Te Whanganui-a-Tara, and I am always drawn to using his typefaces in my designs for Māori. The fonts are designed in Aotearoa by someone with deep knowledge of this place, making them a good fit.
