Christine Ling

Christine Ling is a graphic designer based in Te Whanganui-a-Tara, having studied at Victoria University and Whitireia. Working at Huia Publishers over the past four years, Christine is an expert in crafting rich worlds and diverse ensemble casts that reflect the realities and cultures in Aotearoa. She loves the opportunity she gets to bring the words and worlds of storytellers to life and the challenge each new book provides.



Title:
Falling into Rarohenga by Steph Matuku 
Publisher: HUIA Publishers

Design Statement: The publisher wanted to create a gripping book that plays with themes of an adventure quest, the Māori underworld Rarohenga, and undertones of teenage drama, mystery and fantasy.  The cover turns the everyday upside-down, with a negative space indicative of the antagonist waiting in Rarohenga. The otherworldly red hint at something sinister within, matching the red edges of the page. Chapter headings plays with the switching narratives in the novel.

The Greatest Haka Festival on Earth / Mokopuna Matatini by Pania Tahau-Hodge

Design Statement: This book is bursting with colour and spirit, a visual feast that brings to the forefront the brilliance and larger-than-life superstars of the festival. Each page has details that the Haka-mad community in Aotearoa will pick up on, as well as the personalities of the incredible family the story features.



Title:
Stepping Up: COVID-19 Checkpoints and Rangatiratanga by Luke Fitzmaurice and Maria Bargh
Publisher: HUIA Publishers

Design Statement: This is the first book of the HUATAU series by HUIA. Targeted primarily at an academic audience, with a general audience being secondary, the look and feel needed to be polished, accessible and considered. The series needs to cater for flexibility, be contrary to the bespoke titles in the usual HUIA commercial range yet have enough identifiable qualities to whakapapa back to the HUIA brand. The cover system allows for consistent series design with opportunities for each title to flex individually. The embossed logo was created specifically for HUATAU, highlighting elegance while relating to Huia’s brand. The internal design is considered, with a variety of styles to cater for any text type.
